GRP Roof Fix

When a GRP (Glass Reinforced Plastic) roof begins showing signs of stress—such as cracks, delamination, or aging seams—it’s crucial to perform a precise repair rather than live with gradual deterioration. In this project, we were called in to restore the integrity and waterproofing of a compromised GRP roof section and return it to full performance.

Project Goals & Challenges

  • Identify and repair structural cracks, weak seams, or failing joints without replacing the entire roof.
  • Prepare the existing GRP substrate so that repairs bond fully, preventing further water ingress.
  • Match the repair to the existing surface so the fix is seamless and durable.
  • Minimize disruption and ensure the repair blends with the rest of the roof.

Methods & Execution

Inspection & Damage Mapping

We began by thoroughly assessing the GRP surface, locating areas with cracks, blistering, or adhesion failure. We mapped the damage zones and determined optimal repair boundaries.

Surface Preparation & Cleaning

The affected areas were abraded or sanded to remove loose or degraded resin, ensuring a clean substrate. All dust, debris, or contaminants were removed, often via vacuuming and solvent wipe, to allow proper bonding of repair materials.

Layered Repair & Reinforcement

Depending on damage severity, we applied new GRP resin coats reinforced with mat or fabric layers to bridge cracks and restore structural strength. Each layer was carefully laid and consolidated, ensuring full saturation and elimination of air voids.

Feathering & Blending

Repair edges were feathered into the existing GRP surface so the transition was smooth. Care was taken to match pigmentation and texture, producing a unified surface.

Sealing & Finishing

After curing, the repair was sealed with a protective topcoat resin that enhances UV resistance, gloss, and long-term durability. Final checks ensured no pinholes, blemishes, or weak points remained.

Inspection & Performance Testing

Once complete, we performed water ingress tests over repaired zones and verified there were no leaks underneath. We also inspected from the underside (where accessible) to confirm interior areas remained dry.

Outcomes & Benefits

  • The GRP roof restoration successfully halted active leaks and reinforced previously weak zones.
  • Rather than replacing the entire roof, the targeted repair saved time and cost while extending service life.
  • The repaired area blends into the existing surface, maintaining visual consistency.
  • The new resin layers and topcoat add renewed resistance to UV, moisture, and mechanical stress.
  • The client now enjoys peace of mind that the roof is once again watertight and structurally sound, with reduced risk of further deterioration.
